Best Answer

When the plates of stone or brick are pushing against each other for a moment they dont move. After a while the pressure between the bricks become to strong and there is a sudden jolt. This sudden jolt releases a large amount of energy that creates a large amount of destruction.

The miss placement of soil is also very destructive to buildings, such as Haiti Earthquake.

Statment between the magnitude of a earthquake and how often earthquakes of the magnitude occur?

One statement you could write is that "Earthquakes of higher magnitudes are much rarer than those of lower magnitudes". The magnitude of earthquakes is a logarithmic scale, so a magnitude of 8 is TEN TIMES more powerful than a magnitude 7. This is why earthquakes of higher magnitudes are so much rarer than those of lower magnitudes.

Yes. In 1811-1812, three giant earthquakes, presently estimated at over 8 on the Richter scale, struck ... the epicenters of the earthquakes were actually in Missouri, which is fairly distant, but the earthquakes were so powerful that even in Alabama, significant damage occurred. Significant earthquakes within Alabama itself are known to have occurred in 1886, 1916, 1957, 1959, 1975, 1986, 1989, 1997, 1999, and 2003.
