Hurricane Igor was a powerful and long-lived Cape Verde hurricane that formed in September 2010. It reached Category 4 intensity with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. Igor caused significant damage to Bermuda and led to one fatality.
Scientists and meteorologists have no clear cut cumulative number of deaths that have occurred over the history of man on Earth. The waters off Canada are generally too cold for the formation of hurricanes. Hurricanes that strike the east coast of the United states often lead to serious storms in eastern Canada but there have been instances where Canada was hit by a hurricane. Most recently, hurricane Juan which caused extensive damage and 8 fatalities in Nova Scotia. Hurricane Hazel (1956) retained hurricane strength as it passed over southern Ontario, causing extensive damage and 81 fatalities.

Unless the primary area affected by the storm is the U.S., the country affected must make a request to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) for the retirement of the name.
