The sun always shines but we don't always see it because of cloud coverage. Even if there are clouds in the sky the suns rays still heat up the earth and the cloud then prevents some of the heat from escaping - a bit like a large blanket. If there are no clouds in the sky then the heat of the sun escapes a lot quicker into the atmosphere therefore making it colder - especially when the evening draws in as there is no more sun to heat us up.
