The side of the moon that faces the sun is always illuminated but that side does not always face Earth The different phases of the moon are caused by the moons 28-day?

The Moon has a "day" which is the same as a month; about 29 days. The "days" and "nights" on the moon are 14.5 days each.We always see the same side of the Moon ('the Man in the Moon') because the Moon rotates with the Earth. Most people haven't seen images of the far side of the Moon. As for the phases of the Moon: the Moon is in orbit around the Earth, while the Earth is in orbit around the Sun. Essentially then, both bodies move around the Sun. The different phases are due to the Earth blocking out the Sun from shining on the Moon to various degrees. So when we see a full Moon, the Earth is not in between the Moon and the Sun at all ie the Moon is on the Sun side of the Earth at that point in its orbit.Apex answer:lunar cycle

When does the earth's shadow fall on the moon?

The earth's shadow falls on the moon only during a lunar eclipse. Eclipses of the moon can have varying degrees of totality. The earth's penumbra (partial shadow) may pass over the moon, or the umbra (full shadow) may pass over some or all of the moon's surface. All of these happen only at the time of full moon. The moon's regular phases are NOT caused by earth's shadow on the moon, as is incorrectly believed by some.

Does the sun hide behind the moon at night?

The moon rotates at the same rate it orbits us meaning that we always see the same side of the moon. Also, at any point in time the moon will be half light and half dark. Hints the name dark side of the moon, but don't think that dark side of the moon never sees light because when we have a new moon (causing a self- shadow) the side of the moon we observe is dark and the opposite side is lit up by the sun. The reason why the moon's phase changes is because portions of shadow and light due to the angle at which we observe the moon changes as it rotates around the earth.

How many full moons are there in a month?

How many full moons per month? Usually, one, but it is possible to have two, as there are 13 lunar months and 12 calendar months in a year. When do full moons occur? The moon revolves around the earth roughly once each month. (Moonth). When the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun, it catches the full sunlight, making it look big and round. When the sun and moon are on the same side of the earth, all we see in the lunar night side. This is called the "new" moon. Half moons result when the earth is at roughly right angles to the moon and sun.

Do you have the highest tide in a full moon or a last quarter moon?

With the first quarter moon, the Moon is "waxing", which means getting larger. with the third quarter moon, the Moon is "waning", which means getting smaller. In each case, the Moon is half lit ---- first quarter moon is when it is increasing and the third quarter moon is decreasing

yes

What is the phase of the moon when it is not visible at all the sun lights up only the moon's far side?

New moon

Have man ever seen the far side of the moon?

Yes, during the Apollo missions to the Moon, the modules orbited the Moon, affording a view all around the Moon.

Where is the moon in it's orbit when you cannot see it at all?

When we are facing away from the Moon we are in daylight but for the other side of the world who are facing towards the Moon it is night time and that is when we can't see the Moon at all.

What percentage of the Moon is lit?

The moon is ALWAYS 50% (+/-) illuminated. Though we only see all of the half lit side when the moon is opposite the sun (Full Moon).

What color is the dark side of the moon?

There is no dark side, the moon is similar in colours all over its surface.

Why can't I see your back?

Referring to the moon? The moon is locked in something astronomers call "spin-orbit coupling." Meaning the rotational period of the moon is precisely matched by it's orbital period around the earth. The effect is that only one side of the moon faces the Earth at all times.

Does the sun hit the dark side of the moon?

The sun shines on all sides of the moon- at different times. If you mean does the sun shine on the farside of the moon- away from the earth- yes. When we have a new moon (dark) the sun is shining on the other side. However, when the sun is shining, it is not the darkside- it is light at that moment.

How often do yo see the far side of the moon?

Only 21 people have ever seen the far side of the Moon; they are all the Apollo astronauts. Since nobody has gone to the Moon in the last 45 years, most people NEVER see the far side of the Moon.

What is the side of the moon called that never faces the earth?

The side that's visible.

Why does the Moon cycle from New Moon to Full Moon?

The Phases of the Moon are caused by the amount of lighted Moon surface that is visible from Earth. That changes in standard cycles of 29.5 days as the Moon circles the Earth and the Earth circles the Sun. Half of the Moon is always lit by the Sun, the same as all the planets and satellites. At different times of the month, different amounts of that lighted surface are visible from Earth. If the Moon is between the Sun and Earth, we see only the dark side. If the Moon has circled to the other side of the Earth, away from the sun, we see the lit side. For instance, at the time of the Crescent Moon, the whole Moon is there, but we are seeing (or not seeing) mostly the unlit side of the Moon. At that time, because of the positions of the Earth, Sun and Moon, only the edge of the lit part is visible from Earth.

What happens to the moon when its a half-moon?

The moon is only visible because of the sun's light, which is why the moon appears to glow. When there is a half moon, only half of the moon is reflecting off the sun's light. It all has to do with the angle of the moon, the sun, and the Earth, which is why the moon has so many different phases.
