The Earth's orbit does NOT affect the seasons..

Earth orbits the Sun in the same plane as the rest of the planets.
It is the tilt of Earth's axis of spin (as compared to the plane of its orbit) that causes the seasons as Earth makes its annual orbit of the Sun.

Answer 1. the seasons are due to the tilt of earth's axis as it rotates itself and revolves around the sun. the sun shines down on earth at different angles throughout the year. that causes changes in daylight and sun intensity, namely heat. the more a planet is tilted, the more intense its seasons can be. earth's orbit alone, if the earth was not tilted, would lead the earth to have day and night but no seasons because the sun would always beat down on it with the same intensity.

The Earth is slightly tilted on its axis, so during different times of the year, parts of Earth are pointed/aimed further away from the sun, thus resulting in less sunlight and rays, thus the reason it is colder in the winter.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Earth is actually closer to the sun during the common winter months than it is during the end-spring and summer months, but because the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun in the winter, it is still colder.
