Oxygen forms at the anode in electrolysis because the anode is positively charged and oxygen in a negatively charged ion, so they are attracted. This means that whatever oxygen in combined with is separated (normally aluminum) and so you get aluminum and oxygen. :) hope this helps

When electricity is used to split water, the electrons from the power source connect with the water molecules to detach protons and the two combine to form hydrogen atoms, or, two electrons remove two protons to form a molecule containing two hydrogen atoms. By adding electrons to the water hydrogen is being created, since most chemical reactions are composed of bountiful electrons for fringe adjustments, whereas the hydrogen particle is limited and must start from the beginning. The hydrogen atom is a single proton suspended in an electron cloud and therefore attracted by the force of the newly introduced electrons emmitted from the negative terminal of an electrolytic cell, or cathode, during its formation as a positive ion.
