There are two reasons. First is that the United States has an ideal climate setup in the middle part of the country. In the spring storm systems cause warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico to collide with cool air from Canada and dry air from the Rockies, resulting in the formation of strong thunderstorms. About a mile off the ground a layer of stable air holds thunderstorm activity back, allowing instability to build underneath it. As a result when the storm break through the cap the instability will be enormous, leading to explosively powerful thunderstorms. At the same time wind speed and direction varies with altitude, which sets these storms rotating and also strengthens the updraft. This rotation combined with strong thunderstorm updrafts can then produce tornadoes.
The second reason is that the United States is very good at keeping record of the tornadoes it gets. Many other countries that have a high incidence of tornadoes do not keep detailed records, and many tornadoes are never recorded at all.
The U.S. averages between 1,200 and 1,300 tornadoes per year.
The United States averages about 1200 tornadoes per year, which would work out to about 3600 tornadoes in an average 3-year period.
Kansas gets the highest number of tornadoes per area unit, with about 12 tornadoes per 10,000 square miles per year.
About 75% of recorded tornadoes strike the United States. This is misleading however, as many countries do not keep records of their tornadoes. The actual number of tornadoes outside the U.S. is not known.
Yes, tornadoes can occur in New York. While less common than in the central US "Tornado Alley", New York does experience tornadoes, with an average of 9 tornadoes touching down each year in the state.
So far the year 2004 has had the most confirmed tornadoes in the U.S. at 1,817.
Approximately than 1000 tornadoes touch down in the United States each year on average.
The U.S. averages between 1,200 and 1,300 tornadoes per year.
tornado alley is where most tornadoes are located.
Tornadoes occur in many areas around the world by no region experiences more tornadoes than the central United States. No one really knows for sure how many there are in the US each year, but it is estimated that over 1,000 tornadoes occur each year in the US, although many go undetected and unreported.
Tornadoes can happen at any time of year but they are most common in sprind and early summer.
While the actual number of tornadoes that occur each year can't be measured, the United States sees an average of 1,000 tornadoes in a year. Most tornadoes hit between 4 and 9 pm in the evening.
It varies, but the U.S. averages about 1,200 tornadoes each year.
Well, honey, on average, about 80 people kick the bucket from tornadoes in the US each year. Mother Nature doesn't mess around when she decides to throw a tantrum. So, be prepared and don't mess with tornadoes unless you want to end up in Oz.
That record is held by April 27, 2011 on which 207 tornadoes struck the U.S.
The second highest incidence of recorded tornadoes is in Canada, which averages about 100 tornadoes per year.
Tornadoes are most common in Texas
