because it is a gas that helps living life forms such as us and animals survive. and the stuff we breath out is carbon dioxide which is also necessary because plant breathe that in and breathe out oxeygen which helps us survive. that why its necessary and that's why we need plants.

Also, symbollically, it seems to be the essence of 'the breath of life', which God breathed into Man upon his creation.

Oxygen is needed to survive . Without oxygen , all living things can't survive . All living things needed 3 things to survive . They are air , food and water . Without this three things , no living things can survive .
