a cartel is a group that agrees to charge monopoly price and quantity, splitting quantity amongst themselves.

so a monopoly is one company and a cartel is a group. Profits are lower for cartel members because they only produce a total quantity that is equal to a monopolists production.

What is another name for cartel?

If, by cartel, you mean in a business sense- such as the airline industry- you might think of a cartel being a 'closed shop' to others within that industry, in that the members within the cartel have that business 'sewn up'. Another term sometimes used is a 'monopoly' and in the UK, as well as elsewhere, there are anti-monopoly laws which seek to minimise 'monopolisation' by a 'cartel' within any given industry. My dictionary definition reads "an agreement among apparently competing firms to fix prices etc". Hence, I mentioned airline companies who have a history of behaving in this way.

What is shared monopoly?

Shared or Joint monopoly refers to anticompetitive behaviour by firms, normally an oligopoly, in order to secure monopoly profits for the firms as a group. Essentially, shared monopoly requires some form of collusion but stops short of being a formal cartel. It is therefore similar to tacit collusion. In a shared monopoly firms may not compete for the same customers and have instead local monopolies.

What is a cartel and is such merger profitable?

A cartel is a joing of all business of same sort to form a single business. Cartel mergers are profitable. For example there are three firms which behave as a cartel, if all firms collude to act as a single firm, the merger will be profitable in oligopolistic industries. It will ensure the firm will gain an economic profit and will eventually drive off the weaker firm and the price benifit will go to consumers. (Term cartel is used when similar businesses merge to form a single business, a monopoly).

What is the Steamweedle Cartel in World of Warcraft?

The Steamwheedle Cartel is currently the largest Goblin trade cartel on Azeroth, having multiple outposts whose Neutrality is (begrudingly) acknowledged by the local government. They deal in everything from weapons to illicit substances, and their cross-faction Auction House is widely known and used. In Cataclysm, rumors are that the Bilgewater Cartel, allied with the Horde, will be of almost similar size and power, and migh become a threat to the monopoly of the Steamwheedle Cartel. Their other competitors, the Venture Company, are also widely present but routinely culled by bounties put out on them by the other Goblins.
