Australia is a relatively wealthy country and there is a safety net that protect people from falling into complete abject poverty, In Other words if you have no source of income or have become unable to work for any reason you will receive assistance and an income. food is reasonably priced and medical care and medicines are also provided for those that can not afford them. Compared to the conditions that exist in many other country's of the world the system while open to improvement is pretty good.

According to the Smith Family in 2001.

  1. 13.0% of Australians live in poverty (2.86 million).
  2. 2.9% of children live in poverty.
  3. 6.8% of single parent families live in poverty.

It also depends on your definiation of poverty which is a contested issue in Australia, There is for example no starvation and a high quality of living standards, Some Australian traditional owners live in a higher level of poverty than European counterparts but all needs, living standards and health care are met by government but some argue culture shock may still be an issue.
