As with all tools and technology it depends on the use to which it is put. It cannot, in itself, be good or bad.
It has educated millions and continues to do so. Worldwide news is quickly available. It has given a window on the world to people that have never travelled. It allows instant communication. People may express their views freely. Products and processes are easily found. Competition has increased. Prices have fallen. Most, not all, would consider these advantages.
Many would say that some matters should not be allowed on the internet. Child pornography and teaching how to make bombs are two. Once again most would agree.
The ethical and moral problems are difficult to resolve.
Tyrants and ALL governments wish to control it, to a greater or lesser extent. If that is the case the governing body, not the individuals, are afraid of it. Anything that instils fear in a government also has some control over that government.
