A few years ago one of the largest corporations in the United States was General Motors. Business had been very bad over the past number of years due to competition from foreign automobile makers, along with a US economic recession.

In order to save jobs and keep GM in the auto markets, the Government of the United States, under the leadership of President Obama, decided to participate economically in the recovery of GM after its bankruptcy. This entailed loans and buying the new GM stock. Thus the US government was an economic participant in GM's financial recovery.
