The working class did not benefit from the US Civil War's economic boom in the North. Yes, labor shortages resulted in rising wages, but did not catch up to inflation. Prices rose nearly 75 to 80% in the North during the war years. Wages rose less than 66% of the inflation rate. To an extent the recourse to machinery helped to minimum the lean on labor and also reduced dependence on skilled labor. Women whose husbands were in the military service and immigrants suffered during the war. The so-called Lincoln draft riots in New York City were organized in part to widespread labor discontent, especially among the Irish immigrant working class. Draft opposition was settled by the Lincoln administration through the use of the army. A strike at a cannon factory in New York State was broken by army troops. Labor leaders were imprisoned and some States passed anti union legislation.

Their Economy Flourished.
The social and economic battles fought during the civil war began with the Souths dependence on slave labor. Their economy depended on the good picked and farmed by the slave. The end of slavery threatened that way of life.

The economy of the South during the Civil War heavily relied on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of cash crops like cotton and tobacco. This agrarian system was supported by slave labor, which allowed for large-scale production and significant profits. The South's economy was less industrialized than the North's, making it more vulnerable to disruptions in agricultural output and trade. As a result, the reliance on agriculture shaped the Southern economy and its social structure, contributing to the tensions that led to the Civil War.
The Civil War created a stronger and more stable economy in postwar America. There were organizations and programs put in place such as the IRS that helped to balance out the economy. People also gained a better understanding of how to save for the future.
the civil warfare
Before the Civil War, the North's economy was industrialized and focused on manufacturing, commerce, and wage labor, while the South's economy relied heavily on agriculture, particularly cotton cultivation, supported by a system of enslaved labor. These contrasting economic systems created fundamental differences in social structures, values, and political priorities. The North's push for modernization and abolition of slavery conflicted with the South's dependence on slavery for its agricultural economy, leading to deep-seated tensions. Ultimately, these irreconcilable differences made coexistence increasingly impossible, culminating in the Civil War.
