No, poverty is not the downfall of a society. Use the example of the Native Americans or Aboriginal Australians; they had relatively next to no personal wealth or personal possessions. Their wealth was what nature provided them and their abilities to use that. A very good life when no one interferes with it. Historically, you will find that the downfall of societies can be attributed to any of the standard negative human traits, including, but not limited to greed, power, hate, elitism, etc. Many of these attributes also lead to poverty; poverty is a symptom, not a cause.
