The European Union (EU) is the umbrella organization including the European countries that have eliminated economic, trade, and Immigration barriers between the member countries of the union. Originally started as the European Steel and Coal Community in 1951. Now there is 27 countries.

∙ 14y agoThe most cynical interpretation is that it was intended to entangle France and Germany in economic bonds which would make it mutually beneficial to remain at peace and prosperous. It grew out of an agreement about coal and steel, and so it may be said that the first developments were associated with the principal of international planning for strategic industries, especially important because so much of post-war European industry was destroyed. Over time the economic ties have been strengthened and extended to other industries (most controversially the Common Agricultural Policy CAP). As each step of the economic co-operation has been taken, alongside have been created political ties. It is this political dimension which has taken the organisation from purely economic consideration - the European Economic Community - to become a political entity, the European Union.
