Because Pittsburgh is located at the confluence of three rivers, the Allegheny and the Monongehelia which meet to form the Ohio. During the colonial period this area was of prime importance for trade routes through the Allegheny Mountains. George Washington 'cut his surveyor's teeth' here and later served Brittish General William Braddock in his ill-fated attempt to wrest Fort Duquesene from the French and their Indian allies.
