You would not wish to sell your soul to the devil unless, first of all, you believe the devil exists, then believe that the devil has the power to offer something of value in return. The crazy thing is that someone who believes the devil exists also believes that nothing that could ever be offered in this life would be worth an eternal price. In other words, the very notion of selling one's soul is no more than a myth. Wikipedia says a deal with the devil is a cultural motif, best exemplified by the legend of Faust. Wikipedia explains, "The person offers his or her soul in exchange for diabolical favours. Those favours vary by the tale, but tend to include youth, knowledge, wealth, fame, or power."

In summary, it is only a Faustian myth that you can sell your soul to the devil.

Some people believe you can. In fact, some people believe that to become a Satanist you must do this, but that is not true. This is because Satanists don't really even recognize the devil as an existent being. The idea of selling you soul to the devil is quite old.The phrase "selling your soul to the devil" means to be persuaded to do something bad, because of the money or some other reward you might receive for doing it
No.

The term "selling your soul to the devil" has both a religious and a metaphorical use.

"Selling your soul," as an idiom, means that you give up control of your life or art in exchange for some benefit or advantage. This is similar to the concept of "selling out" (sacrificing artistic integrity to gain commercial and financial success).

The metaphor is based on the actual concept expressed in Faust, The Devil and Daniel Webster, Damn Yankees, and similar works, that one can get everything he wants in the world by promising his eternal soul to Satan. In many cases, the moral of the story is that the seller is tricked by the Devil, and his life becomes worthless or miserable as a result of the fulfillment of his desires.

Selling implies that the human receives something in return. In some ways I suppose this is possible, but not in the way it gets portrayed in Cartoons or movies. If there is a record of anyone selling their soul to the devil, it would be Judas Iscariot, who sold Jesus to people who wanted to kill him for lots of money. Keep in mind that he regretted his decision not soon after and tried to take it back, but couldn't and ended up committing suicide. (Matthew 27:3-10)

The expression "sell your soul to the devil" is not a literal saying. It means doing something that you know is wrong, but benefiting (usually monetarily) from it. For example, this expression is used when politicians do something that is bad for their constituency (health, finances, lives), but makes the politician money.

The idea of a person "selling his soul" to the devil is not a Biblical concept. The Bible indicates that every soul belongs to God.

Ezekiel 18:4 (KJV) "Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die."

You cannot sell something that doesn't belong to you. From a Biblical standpoint, this is a lie that the devil uses to keep a person thinking there is no way God would ever forgive them or welcome them back after doing something wicked in order to profit. The devil apparently wants a human to think that he "owns them" after rewarding them in some way for doing an act of wickedness. King Manasseh was described in the Bible as someone who actually worshipped demons, and even sacrificed his own children to them. (2 Kings 21:5) But he later repented after he was humiliated and was accepted back into God's good graces. (2 Chronicles 33:12,13)

The ransom sacrifice of Jesus can even cover serious sins, including wicked greed, as long as the person truly repents and changes his course:

Ephesians 1:7 - "By means of him we have the release by ransom through the blood of that one, yes, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his undeserved kindness."

Romans 8:38,39 - "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
