This depends on the on-line college and its individual college and its admissions policies. Some on-line colleges will require a similar admissions process to traditional 4 year colleges (which usually requires high school course work, GED scores, or college transcripts showing a minimum number of credits) while others are known as "open enrollment" which means that anyone can sign up without any sort of admissions screening. The most important thing is to check for accreditation. Regional accreditation is generally considered the best choice since your credits will be accepted pretty much everywhere if you need to transfer. If a college is nationally accredited you will wish to check with the US Dept. of Education in order to make sure the accreditation is recognized and the school is not a diploma mill.
