However, Czech educational system might be a bit different from the others across Europe, mainly because primary and secondary education are together one year longer than in most of the European states. We have three steps of education:

• Primary school, 9 years of education, which is obligatory.

• High school / Grammar schools / Technical schools, another 4 years of education (or you can choose to leave the primary school earlier to attend 6 or 8 years secondary school) - in the end you graduate by a four or five subjects test called maturita(maturity in English). The secondary education is not obligatory though.

• University / College (vysoká škola in Czech, meaning high school - Czechs sometimes get a messy and confusing educational vocabulary) where you graduate depending on the school you study. Most common is getting a Bc. degree after 3 years, Mgr. degree after 5 years and Dr. degree after 7 years.
