How can teachers tell when you use a translator?

Often, translators such as Google translate are useful for single words, but if you use them to translate more text, they become inaccurate in terms of tenses and the endings of words. Also, they will sometimes use a different word to what you have been taught. For example, if you try to translate a block of text, there may be several words that essentially mean the same thing and the translator may pick a word that you have not been taught as oppose to one you have been taught that means the same thing.
