During World War I a division of the French army (The French Alpine light infantry battalion) called Chasseurs Aplins gained fame for being counted on to break the stalemate of trench warfare in the French Alps region. They were given the nickname "les Diables Bleus", which translated in English is "the Blue Devils." During the 1922-1923 academic year, William H. Lander and Mike Bradshaw who were the editor-in-chief and the managing editor respectively ofThe Trinity Chronicle, began referring to Duke's athletic teams as The Blue Devils. Their freshman class was the first class of post war students, so the nickname needed no explanation and has stuck until this day.
