It is said that cavemen (homoerectus or something like that) used grunts (the only sound they were pretty much capable of) to communicate emotions, then finally as human kind evolved we needed new sounds for all the emotions possible and everything, eventually when our brain became more developed humans just started using words and of course because there was a distance from one "tribe" of cave people to the other they made different words for different things. Example: FRENCH CAVE-MAN ENGLISH CAVE-MAN
