How do you get transcripts from a high school that is closed?

If your high school was closed permanently, go to your school system's central office (the office of the superintendent). The records were probably moved there or they will know where they are.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, when a school closes "the generally accepted practice is for the school to make arrangements with the state-licensing agency to store their records." If the school that closed is a public school, you can also contact the main office of the school district that the school was in. There is a good chance that they will have the records of the closed school.

If the closed school was affiliated with a religious organization, you can contact someone within that organization to help you find out where the records were sent when the school was closed. If the organization has another school that is still open, that would be a good place to start. If the school was affiliated with a particular church, that church might still have the school's records.

You write or phone the school and ask if there is a charge to get the copy. Sometimes they charge, sometimes they don't.
