The grade point average certainly is if it is based on a 4.0 scale. There is no minimum score for the ACT test. The University of Chicago bases admission on the overall application.

Would applying to the University of Chicago with a 26 on the ACT be a huge reach if everything else on my application is outstanding?

Schools generally look at the whole picture of an applicant. While a 26 isn't fabulous, the whole picture may be enticing enough that they'll take a serious look at you. But you can take the ACT again. And, of course, you should apply at additional schools. The University of Chicago is a fine institution, but lots of top students attend schools with lesser pedigrees and do just fine, if not better.
