To teach special education within the public school system within the United States, you must have a bachelor's degree in a special education teacher program from a regionally accredited college or university and state teacher certification. There are alternative routes that may be possible, however you would have to contact the State Board of Education, within the state you would like to teach for information. No, you can become a school social worker but not a school guidance counselor. In order to be a school counselor, you need to meet certification standards by your state which require specific internship experiences under a certified school counselor. When you get your Masters in School Counseling, you spend a year doing this in a school. When you get your MSW, you spend two years doing field work under an MSW, which may or may not be in a school. You may need to select school social work as a concentration in your MSW program, or go back to take Post-Masters course, or be fine with just the MSW-check with your state and MSW programs in your area. An MSW is a great degree, but many, many of the jobs exist outside of a school setting. A Masters in School Counseling, is a way to be sure you will work within a school, but the degree is limiting outside of that setting. And when jobs are hard to find, you may wish you had an MSW.
