English language can be promoted in schools where it is not spoken as a native language but as a second language either as a curriculum subject or spoken by interactive learning modules, stressing on its importance as an International language.

In nations where it is used as a native or official language, interactive practices will help in its common usage among students.Other skills like reading and writing should be introduced at higher learning practices as modules perfected for the level of proficiency attained.

Some activities to promote learning of the English Language include:

  • Prepare 1-page essay which includes deliberate misspellings. Divide the class into teams. Each team will write the "misspelled" word then the correctly spelled word. The team who finds the most gets a reward of 15 minutes of "free time" during class.
  • Create a contest to run over a longer time, say 2 months. Each student must find at least 6 instances of either misspelled words or incorrect grammar. They must copy down the wrong spelling or sentence, and where they found it. Students who find the most examples get a reward.
  • Work with a First (or 2nd or 3rd) grade Teacher to have students from a higher grade visit the 1st grade class to read to those students. (Or, find a Nursing Home or Hospital willing to participate.) This will give students practice reading aloud, without pressure, and will increase confidence for what the older students do know.
  • Set up a "Scrabble Day" in the cafeteria with mini contests or tournaments. Students should challenge as appropriate using standard Scrabble rules, with liberal use of dictionaries placed at every table. If Scrabble Day is held recurrently, you could have Leaderboards posted. So no one "fails" at the game entirely, the students with the lower scores are continually re-entering a new Scrabble game with others who had lower scores. OR, these students could be assigned to "oversee" the games and be the "Final Judge" who must look up a challenged word in the Dictionary and declare who is correct. Switch roles every week; higher scorers can sit out and be the "Judges". That way, all students' scores have a better chance to be closer to a "mean" for the classroom.
  • Have students list the "commonly misspelled" words, with teacher's help. Then have students look for and cut out those words from magazines and newspapers. Each student will make a collage or a poster of the (misspelled) words they found, and below each misspelled word have them write the correct word.
  • The internet is full of misspellings and grammatical errors. For example, on WikiAnswers, many student spell "dose" when they mean the verb "does". Challenge students to find as many unique misspelled words or grammatical problems in Internet writing.
  • Parlor games are great as a quiet classroom activity. For example: "How many words can you make from the letters used in the word "environmental"? This could be a weekly activity to do for fun. Set a minimum number of words every student must make, so everyone must do the task even though it has no grade given.
  • As a class task, ask students to brainstorm ideas about how they would teach people who never heard the English Language. Students might come up with excellent ideas you can use or modify and use with them.
  • Get students to read! Readers learn language! Grammar, syntax, spelling, and comprehension are all combined in reading.
