This is a term associated with the Making Words program for teaching phonics and spelling, introduced in 1992 by James and Patricia Cunningham. "Transfer words" are words that are not taught directly, but which the student is asked to read or spell using skills already learned using other words. The student transfers his or her skills from the old words to the new ones.
