Of [or from] the black is an Italian equivalent of 'DiNiro'. Actor Robert Mario DeNiro Jr [b. August 17, 1943] owes the misspelling of his name to the error of Immigration officials at the time of the award winning actor/director/producer's great-grandparents. The name in the eastern central Italian province of Molise, from which DeNiro's family comes, is 'DiNiro'. Officials misheard the pronunciation, and therefore wrote the last name as 'DeNiro'. But either way, the Italian preposition 'di' and the French/Portuguese/Spanish preposition 'de' both mean 'of, from'. The masculine adjective/noun 'niro' is a regional variation of 'nero', which means 'black'.
