It's a difficult question because the criteria for 'best' varies. Also, the performance of every school has its ups and downs depending on the incumbent head teacher, the quality of its year intakes and also the way the government assesses them.

The best girls' school in 2009, by academic results, was The Perse School for Girls, in Cambridge. Like many other leading schools in England, however, Perse Girls withdrew from the league tables in the same year stating that they were a narrow and meaningless reflection of the quality of a school.
