The continuum of needs is contained in an idea that in order to achieve optimal physical, mental and emotional development, human beings require the kind of experience to which our species adapted during the long process of our evolution. Speculating on the word "continuum" it pertains to the continuity, the consistency of needs being met properly and enough.
This continuum of needs is taken into consideration with regards to human growth and development. Let us recall that it is believed that human growth and development has stages which are identified as the infant stage, toddler stage, childhood stage, adolescent stage, and adulthood stage. Each stage has its own needs that we can say and prove that these said needs are compressed and simplified into a triangle diagram which is the well-known theory called as the "hierarchy of needs" by Maslow. This theory comprise of the Physiological and Psychological needs occupying the largest part, safety and security, Love and Belongingness, Self esteem, and self actualization occupying the highest part. This theory can be connected to the concept of the continuum of needs in the aspect these needs in the triangle are the needs of every human being and that it only differs from the quality and intensity of needs during each stages of life. But there could only be one bottom line which is the fact that every stage of life a certain need can should be met to be able to achieve the highest fulfillment of every human being and that when the basic needs are met during the early stages of life we can expect more that needs required by the future stage would be higher than that of the basic needs that are not met at an early point of life.
