A grade C in a GCSE science (Core Science will suffice) is required for careers in Primary School teaching and Nursing

GCSE sciences (either Core and Additional or separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics) are used to get into A levels and from there you apply to do medicine, pharmacy, optometry or other careers such as microbiology and science degrees.
