It probably goes back to ancient times-- we know there were teachers and scholars five thousand years ago or more, in ancient Israel and ancient Egypt, for example. There may not have been schoolrooms or textbooks, but there were elders (in some cultures they were gurus, or shamans, or temple high priests) who were perceived as experts, and they educated the next generation. Classes would have been outdoors back then, and the teacher would have instructed the students (who were undoubtedly boys only) orally, telling them the knowledge considered important by that society.
