The most important difference between both countries by 1846 was population. Mexico had 7 million inhabitants, while the United States boasted a population of 17 million at the time -- this is the main reason the U.S. won the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
In economic and military terms, Mexico was in a relatively better shape, as it relied on European machinery and weapons, mostly of British and French origin. In social terms, Mexico was also more advanced than the United States, as it already had banned slavery since the 1830's.

Former Mexican territories were supposed to ban slavery, except Texas. This was defined ion the Wilmot Proviso (1846). However, it was not enforced, and caused further divisions between pro-slavery states and the North. It resulted in the American Civil War (1861-1865).

The main disagreement between the United States and Mexico in 1846, when the war began, was the boundary of Texas. The state was just annexed to the chagrin of the Mexicans, who had lost it in 1836 to independence. Mexico had the boundary at the Nueces River, but the Americans believed Texas should stop at the Rio Grande, to the south. In 1846, President James Knox Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor into the disputed territory between the two rivers, and the Mexicans crossed over to engage them. This gave Polk the excuse he needed to ask Congress for a declaration of war.
