In my opinion, wordreference [dot com] is one of the best online translators, since it has every sense of the word, and not only literal translations. Also, there are forums in which you can ask a native speaker how they would say words or phrases, or about slang which wouldn't be a in a traditional dictionary.
As for translators in which you can just copy & paste some text (rather than a dictionary site)... for simple sentences and non-idiomatic or metaphoric phrases, Google translator works just fine. For example, if you wanted to know how to say "cat," in all likelihood, an online auto translator will get it right with "Katze." However, if you were translating something like "He bit the dust," in English, referring to "he died," an online translator like google translator is going to say literally, "he bit the dust," as in "he bit into/ate the dust." For any idiomatic phrase, or even a word that has many different meanings, any automatic online translator is almost guaranteed to get it wrong. Just fyi.
