It gives you a sense of the bigger community around you. I have friends who have volunteered at the local hospital and they say it is one of the greatest things they've ever done. My high school does have this requirement, and while I fulfilled the 50 hours required at the library, I felt compelled to do more. I volunteer for Red Cross and help clean up polluted lakes and plan benefit concerts, and I find it amazing that there are things we can do for others without compensation. Volunteering is a cleansing activity for the soul. I think it should be required because all high schoolers need that sense of giving before they go off into the real world.
