Natchez, Mississippi was originally founded in 1716 as Ft. Rosalie. It was the site of a huge battle with the Natchez Indians in 1729. (The town was later named after this tribe.) It became the County Seat of Adams County in 1817.

Clarion University began operation September 10, 1867 as the Carrier Seminary of Western Pennsylvania. It was named in honor of Darius Carrier who donated $10,000, but the founding can be attributed to the Erie Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church who started the seminary to further the endeavors of the church and celebrate their centennial. The University has since evolved to be called Clarion University. They have expanded quite a bit in their offerings and now even offer classes online.
