It was established by 32 African countries, with prominent leaders such as Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, and Julius Nyerere of Tanzania playing key roles in its formation. The OAU aimed to promote unity and cooperation among African nations and to address issues of colonialism and apartheid. In 2001, it was succeeded by the African Union (AU).
