A lot of the population (around 98% of it in fact) have no idea where their food comes from nor how their clothes were made, among many other things. And many people do not know the attributes and management that goes into the things that we eat and wear. As far as our future generations are concerned, they think that their clothes and food comes from the shopping mall and the grocery store, respectively, not from plants and animals that have grown from the soil of this Earth.
It all comes down to how the population appreciates the values of agriculture and farming. If people are educated more about agriculture, they would appreciate it more. They wouldn't be so quick to ridicule farmers for being "cruel" to animals or being "solely profit-driven with no care for environment or animal husbandry." The media has done an excellent job of point out the negativities of farmers and agriculture, never pointing to the good things and how agriculture is the life-blood of the world. Nor have they ever really shown that farmers (and ranchers) care about the environment and their animals more than most people think.
So ultimately, and in more simple terms, the importance of agricultural education is to educate people about agriculture and to help them appreciate it more and not take it so much for granted.
