Excusing assignments is one of those situations in which if you excuse one student from an assignment, where do you draw the line when other students ask to be excused? For that reason, as a general policy, once an assignment is given, no exceptions to being expected to turn it in should be given.
An exception to that policy might, and I emphasize MIGHT, be if a student was in a serious car accident and was unable to be in school or do the work for a couple of weeks. In that case, it might be kind to cut back on the assignments required in order for the student to catch up. Still, assignments are given for a reason, so even in that situation, a better solution might be to work with the student after school or work out providing a way to catch up that would not require excusing assignments.
