While there is a popular and false urban legend that Thomas Crapper invented the flush toilet, it happens to be a fact that Thomas Crapper was a real person, ( baptised 28 September 1836; died 27 January 1910) a plumber, and the holder of several Plumbing related patents.

In 1853 he was apprenticed to his brother George, a plumber. Apprenticeship is like a hands-on education in a trade; better than formal school in many ways, and essential in Crapper's time when formal education was not freely available to everyone.
