Students should be graded more on effort and not ability, because not everyone has an ability but everyone can try hard. Some people have an ability and put out no effort at all.

Still that being said there are somethings were ability is reward in spite of any grading system. For example a good painting by someone with an inborn ability will be more valuable than the painting created by someone who worked hard but had no ability.

How do you interpret a student's responses on a Schonell graded word reading test?

See the Related Links for "Schonell Reading Test" at the bottom for the first part of your answer. So, you calculate a "reading age" from the number of words read correctly. Compare that to the student's chronological age to see if the student is reading at level for their age, or are reading either below or above level for their age.I've just read that the Schonell spelling test is considered out-moded, so I don't know if you should trust the results of the reading test.

Where did the phrase a for effort originate?

in western countries such as the United States, students are graded by letters, A being the best grade. this term implies that, although the student (or whoever) tried very hard (applied the best effort) they probably didn't get an 'A' overall... therefore, they got an "A for effort" which is way of being nice to someone who performed poorly for some reason other than effort, like being ignorant or whatever...

No, it is not unethical to help a friend revise a report when you know they are being graded on it because most students look up their information on the Internet.
