The idle surge problem, where the RPM fluctuates while in neutral, is typically caused by issues with the engine's air-fuel mixture, a malfunctioning idle air control valve, or vacuum leaks. It can also stem from dirty throttle bodies or a failing mass airflow sensor. Diagnosing the exact cause often requires checking for error codes, inspecting vacuum hoses, and cleaning or replacing affected components. Addressing these issues can stabilize the idle and prevent RPM fluctuations.
I had the same problem and it turned out to be the fuel purge censor
Why does my 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, with a 2.4L engine, run rough at idle but runs normally when placed in neutral? I changed the plugs and air filter, but the problem continues.
maybe the clutch
Mine was doing that for a while. I took the Idle Air Control valve apart and cleaned it. Problem solved. Its normal for the engine to idle higher when its cold though. Once it warms up a bit the idle should settle down.
check coolant level
Hi I had this problem. make sure your water level in the radiator is full,because there is a sensor kelvin
A vacuum leak (Brake booster).
plugs or vacuum. 65;
the engine to stall and surge at idle
auto or stick shift
most common problem causing a surge while a car idles is the MAF-Mass Air Flow sensor is contaminated. typically this will throw a code (check engine light aka MIL)
If your 1997 GMC 5.7L Vortec has a misfire at an idle but not while under throttle, the problem is likely the timing. This can be adjusted.
