It depends on where you are located, but in The USA, diesel is about the same prices as premium. (today 11/7/2012 woodbridge NJ- premium 3.82-3.89, diesel 3.79-3.89 per gallon)

In Europe diesel is cheaper because thier diesel regs./additives/processing are different and they sell more of it( us <10% diesel, europe >40%)

Why does diesel cost 15p per liter more than unleaded petrol?

I think the oil companies are having us consumers over a barrel. Since the duty on fuel (Unleaded and Diesel) are the same, the difference is made up through the Oil companies and retailers. The media is saying that it's to do with supply and demand, well I think that is bull. Becuase there has be a shift from petrol to diesel cars the oil companies can see that us consumers will be visiting the petrol forecourts less often because a diesel car delivers more MPG than a petrol car. So in order to make up for the loss they hike up the diesel prices to make up the potential loss. Diesel is cheaper to refine that unleaded too.

What is the difference between diesel and unleaded fuel?

Diesel fuel is heavier and oilier than unleaded fuel, which is lighter and more volatile. Diesel engines compress air to ignite the fuel, while unleaded fuel is ignited by a spark plug in gasoline engines. Diesel fuel is more energy-dense and efficient, but unleaded fuel produces fewer emissions.
