The main reasons are:

  1. Some energy wasted in braking as heat by non-hybrid can be recovered and stored in the batteries for later use in accelerating the hybrid.
  2. A lower horsepower, more fuel efficient, smaller, and lighter internal combustion engine can be used in the hybrid that is adequate fro highway cruising speed with the additional power needed for acceleration and hill climbing provided by the batteries than is needed in the non-hybrid where the internal combustion engine must have excess horsepower needed for acceleration and hill climbing even when this power is not in use.
  3. As the typical purchaser of a hybrid wants better efficiency as a priority than the typical of a non-hybrid, the manufacturers of hybrids go to extra effort to reduce energy lost to air drag, rolling resistance of the tires, etc. than do the manufacturers of non-hybrids. Honda even uses a special 0W-20 oil in their hybrids to reduce energy loss in the engine due to viscosity drag of the oil as it flows thru the engine!

Best Energy Efficient Cars?

While hybrids are more efficient than the standard vehicle, some hybrids are more energy efficient than others. All hybrids have an electrical engine that allows electricity to be used in times of need in order to support the gasoline engine thus using less gasoline. Many hybrids today have very high gas mileage and are very energy efficient. While some models get 40-60 miles per gallon, the Nissan Leaf gets 106 miles per gallon.
