The starter in your vehicle works at a very low speed. It is only used to crank the engine enough to help it run from a standstill. The car's normal idle speed is +/- 700 - 800rpm. Even at this low speed it would be too fast for the starter to handle. Furthermore, keeping the starter engaged would cause unnecessary wear on the starter parts, as well as the flywheel gear (ringgear). It would also be another mechanical device the engine has to turn, thus decreasing the efficiency.

Assumeing it's the same starter, the bendix(the gear on the end of the starter that engages the flywheel)could be bad, and or the starter it self could be bad. sounds like number of teeth on new flywheel does not match number of teeth on starter. find out from mechanic that installed new fly wheel, how many teeth on flywheel if he doesnt know, a ford dealer can tell you from the part number on your receit. then ask how many teeth should be on starter to match fly wheel pull starter and count teeth

This sounds like there are some teeth missing on the flywheel. If the bad spot is positioned over the starter gears, the starter will just spin but if it catches on a good part, it will turn the engine over fine. Just what the previous answer said. You have some teeth missing on your flywheel. There is probably nothing wrong with any of your starters. If you have a manual tranny, just put the car in gear and try to push it forward until you fill the flyweel engage with the starter. The car should start then. My 1986 ford aerostar had the same porblem as stated above and this was an easy solution until I had the time and money to fix it correctly.

No,there is no circuit protection between the battery and the starter. If the starter is causing a dead short to ground, there is definitely something wrong with the starter. Pull it and have it checked. The switch that engages the high current is inside the starter. If the starter is fried and perhaps something melted to ground, every time you engage it you will get a dead short.

That sounds to me like the solenoid is stuck. That's the part of the starter that engages the gear to the flywheel in order to turn the engine and thus start it. Try tapping the starter a few times with a hammer to knock it loose (I swear this works), then if it keeps happening to you it's time to buy a new starter yo.
