∙ 11y agoCathode ray oscilloscopes are very versatile instruments, serving a very large number of applications. Traditional (true) cathode ray oscilloscopes were designed to monitor and plot one or more contiguous analog signals in various methods: one or more input signals as a function of time, a simple arithmetic function of these signals (their sum, their difference, etc) as a function of time, or one signal as a function of another.
Modern oscilloscopes are even more versatile, as they are digital. Digital oscilloscopes emulate cathode ray oscilloscopes, and add digital signal analysis and processing.

There was a type of Cathode Ray tube that used analog means to store the information on the screen, The storage takes place on the screen itself. They were pretty rare, and not seen at all today, as they didn't work very well. Perhaps that is what you are referring to?
