Electricians use them to view signal voltages, usually as a two-dimensional graph of one or more electrical potential differences (vertical axis) plotted as a function of time or of some other voltage (horizontal axis).

Oscilloscopes are used in the sciences, medicine, engineering, telecommunications, and industry.

Special-purpose oscilloscopes may be used for such purposes as analyzing an automotive ignition system, or to display the waveform of the heartbeat.

Cathode ray oscilloscopes are very versatile instruments, serving a very large number of applications. Traditional (true) cathode ray oscilloscopes were designed to monitor and plot one or more contiguous analog signals in various methods: one or more input signals as a function of time, a simple arithmetic function of these signals (their sum, their difference, etc) as a function of time, or one signal as a function of another.

Modern oscilloscopes are even more versatile, as they are digital. Digital oscilloscopes emulate cathode ray oscilloscopes, and add digital signal analysis and processing.
