there are a number of different types of capacitors, each with its own identification. on common electrolytic capacitors the negative terminal is shorter and the side with the negative terminal is marked with a white line.

note that ceremic capacitors are bipolar. ie. it doesnt matter which way they are connected. thse are shpaed like a bean and are commonly brown or green.

if in doubt look up the data sheet for the component. just type in the identification on the capacitor into a search engine.

How do you determine which wire on a led or capacitor is the negative end?

on an LED, the negative end is the shorter side. on a capacitor, the negative end usually has some kind of marking on it, whether its a line, or an arrow or something. with ceramic disk capacitors, there is no negative end, you just attach each side to a positive end, usually for a solar panel or something to store energy.

Do electrolytic capacitors generally have polarity?

Yes. Electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Capacitors with positive and negative poles generally have positive and negative marks. Generally, for capacitors with pins, the long end of the pin is the positive electrode. For cylindrical electrolytic capacitors, there will be a vertical line printed on the negative side of the capacitor. SMD capacitors generally have no positive and negative poles. --- We're JYH HSU(JEC) Electronics Ltd (or Dongguan Zhixu Electronic Co., Ltd.), an electronic components manufacturer. What is a padder capacitor?

Padders are a type of Capacitors which are used at low frequency end of the radio dial.

What is a non polarized capacitor?

A polarized capacitor is one which has a polarity, positive on one terminal, negative on the other. This makes it superficially look like a battery. In use, the capacitor has its positive voltage always higher than that on the negative terminal, it matters that this is the case and this gives rise to the term polarized. This sort of capacitor is commonly found in power supply filters.

What does a capacitor store if the sum of charges of both capacitors is zero?

it may consist much of negative and positive chargeAnswerA capacitor stores energy within an electric field set up between its plates. It does not 'store' charage, as the net charge is the same both before and after the capacitor has been 'charged' (unfortunate use of the word!). What it does is to enable charge to be separated, with one plate then becoming negative with respect to the other, resulting in an electric field between the two plates. When we describe the 'amount of charge' on a capacitor, by convention, we mean the amount of negative charge stored on its negative plate, and not the sum of this and the amount of positive charge on its positive plate!

Why the capacitor broke?

You probably put the negative end in to a positive power source. Did you enjoy the fumes?

Is a cathode positive or negative in capacitor?

Depending on the capacitor we are using it will have a cathode. For example if we take a unicapacitor(it will allow current on both sides) it will have a negative and a bi capacitor it will not have negative

Do ac capacitor have positive and negative polarity?

both

Do you connect the positive wire in a electric current to the positive side of a capacitor?

Yes, that is correct.

Is there a direction of current with an Axial Capacitor?

Absolutely. The end of the body of the capacitor that has a radial indentation (like it was crimped) is the positive end. The manufacturers also color coat the ends, depending on the size of the capacitor. The black is the positive and the silver is negative. If you are doing an in-line installation (HID headlight kit, stereo, etc.), put the negative end of the capacitor where the source of current is coming from and the the positive end where it needs to go to. If the polarity is reversed, you may only get a momentary blip of power and then nothing at all. Just reverse the installation to correct it. Hope this helps. - mn1225

What is the net charge on the charged capacitor?

there is no net charge on the capacitor because nomber of positive and negative charge and negetive are equal.

Wiring 1 farad capacitor?

the capacitor has 2 wires or poles, one is the ground or negative and the other one is the hot or positive... if it is for car audio amp the ground is connected to the chassis and the positive is connected to the battery and to the positive wire of the amp.

Why capacitor does not store alternate current but store direct current?

Because Alternet current has both positive as well as negative cycle capacitor does not conduct for negative cycle of the Alternet current and DC all are positive cycle thats why it capacitor conduct for DC not for AC

How do you charge a capacitor?

You charge a capacitor by placing DC voltage across its terminal leads. Make sure when using a polarized capacitor to place positive voltage across the positive lead (the longer lead) and negative voltage across the negative lead. Also make sure that the voltage you charge the capacitor to doesn't exceeds its voltage rating.
