synchronization panel is a panel that brings two or more gensets together in one distribution system supplying the load with the adequate amount of energy supply required for the load. when the main supply is interrupted, the genset comes on and certain parameters (voltage, frequency and phase) have to align before the circuit is opened for the load to receive power supply.

ATS which stands for automatic transfer switching, helps to bridge the gap of time loss between the time the main supply is interrupted and the time it takes to start up the backup supply or genset by automatically switching to genset immediately when there is no power supply or fault with the main power supply.

What Is Automatic Transformer SwitchATS?

A transfer switch, in general, switches load between two sources. An automatic transfer switch or ATS is usually installed where a generator is located to allow the generator to give power while electricity is out.

How do you wire Total Power automatic transfer switch?

Like any Automatic Transfer Switch, wiring ATS not easy and not difficult. It requires a qualified electrician to wire it properly. You can read more about wiring an Automatic Transfer Switch in the related link.

What cable size is needed for 415VAC 3 Phase 400kVA generator to a load 50meters away?

As example, at 380V the generator produces 685A per phase. Therefore you will require 2 x 120mm2 cables per phase. (1 x 120mm2 cable will support 365A per phase). In total you will require approximately 1/2km of cable to cover the 50m run between the generator and the ATS panel/Load. i.e. 5 phases in total - 2 x 50m cables per phase.

Can a 200 amp automatic transfer switch be used with a 100 amp service?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service.No. The ampacity of the transfer switch is rated at 100 amps. What this means is that the manufacturer of the switch states that the mains, breakers installed are all rated for a maximum of 100 amps. What can be done, is to install a 100 amp breaker in the 200 amp service and use the output of the breaker to feed into the line side of the automatic transfer switch. The load side of the ATS will be a sub panel that have your preferred loads that you want to stay on during a power failure. This said, it is a complicated job in as much as you have to know wire sizes, ampacity of wires and proper electrical workmanship. Such a project should be left to a licensed electrical contractor to take out the proper permits and call for proper inspections. By taking this route it will leave you confident that if any mishaps happen to the installation down the road your insurance company will be behind you 100%.As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed. Before you do any work yourself,on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances, always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.
