I have been told that in order for the transmission of electricity from the power plant to users to be an efficient endeavor, the backbone of the city's electricity grid is coming down from those big power line towers that we see occasionally along rivers like in Norristown Pennsylvania, those big lines are fed by the highest voltage available according to today's technology, and then they must be down converted to our smaller and small voltages at substations and distribution boxes. The highest voltages help the electric company save energy production costs, and 1000 amps of 30,000 volts can travel long distances over a smaller cable while producing less heat in comparison to if the voltage were less and more amps.
