This name probably comes from engineers working on electrical installations such as railways. If it becomes apparent or suspected, that the line they are working on has become live, a quick and easy way to make it safe, is to throw a crowbar across the live terminals. This will cause an immediate short circuit, blowing a breaker or fuse. A large metal object such as a crowbar, would be to hand and ideal for making such a short circuit.

Crowbar protection is 'brute force' way of making a circuit safe. Instead of breaking a circuit, it deliberately causes an overload, in order to trip a safety device futher down the line.

What is a combination circuit?

It was mentioned that there are two different ways to connect two or more electrical devices together in a circuit. They can be connected by means of series connections or by means of parallel connections. When all the devices in a circuit are connected by series connections, then the circuit is referred to as a series circuit. When all the devices in a circuit are connected by parallel connections, then the circuit is referred to as a parallel circuit. A third type of circuit involves the dual use of series and parallel connections in a circuit; such circuits are referred to as compound circuits or combination circuits. The circuit depicted at the right is an example of the use of both series and parallel connections within the same circuit. In this case, light bulbs A and B are connected by parallel connections and light bulbs C and D are connected by series connections. Why scr is used in ac or dc voltage regulator?

The only use of an SCR in a powersupply regulator that I know of is a Crowbar protection circuit to force the breaker to pop if the regulation fails and the powersupply output voltage rises too high.

What is the definition of applied voltage?

Any voltage that is fed into or "applied" to an electrical circuit is referred to as an "applied voltage".

What is ac ground?

If a circuit is grounded through a capacitor it is referred to as AC ground because ac signal can pass through the capacitor DC level is blocked

What is crowbar in television transmitter?

In the context of television transmitters, a crowbar is a protective circuit used to safeguard sensitive components from voltage spikes or surges. It typically consists of a thyristor or similar device that triggers to short-circuit the power supply when an over-voltage condition is detected, thereby preventing damage to the transmitter. This mechanism helps ensure the reliability and longevity of the broadcasting equipment.
